Empower Farms is, first and foremost, a space for people with disabilities. We offer a range of opportunities for folks with a variety of abilities to grow food with us, as well as to be outside, socialize with friends, and meet new people.

Hosting field trips for disability organizations around the Miami area is an important part of what we do at Empower Farms. It means we can share the farm with a much greater number of individuals with disabilities.

Field trip groups typically consist of 10 to 30 individuals with disabilities accompanied by staff or chaperones, though we can also accommodate groups of other sizes.

Past field trip visitors include:

  • ARC of South Florida
  • Atlantis Academy
  • The WOW Center
  • Miami-Dade County Parks Disability Services
  • Ruth Owens Kruse Educational Center
  • The Social Cog
  • Nature Links for Lifelong Learning
  • Carrfour Supportive Housing for Veterans
  • Easter Seals Adult Day Services

Most groups arrive in the late morning and stay for two to four hours, taking a break for lunch in the middle. We have picnic tables in the shade, as well as some indoor tables, where Teammates can socialize over lunch. Typically, the field trip group will be the only visitors at the farm on that day.

Most field trips are weekdays or Saturdays, and must be during daylight hours.

Programs are welcome to visit us on a regular basis, be it yearly, monthly, or in some cases weekly.

We offer this service free of charge.

Before the day of the field trip, we discuss the aptitudes of the group with program staff in order to plan appropriate activities.

When they arrive, most groups are split up into several teams to work on different activities around the farm, with each team led by a farm staff member. This allows Teammates with different needs and abilities to engage in achievable tasks.

Visitors participate in multiple activities during the field trip.

Each day we offer a variety of activities, depending on the abilities of our visitors and what's growing on the farm.

For Teammates who would like to join us at the farm every single week, we offer extended volunteering.

This opportunity is open to Teammates who have participated in several field trips or Family Days, and demonstrated an ability to work independently on farm activities.

Extended volunteers come to the farm on a regular schedule, up to several times per week, and work on an evolving set of farm activities, often without direct supervision by farm staff who may be engaged in other tasks. Extended volunteers will refine their skills and build an understanding of how eco-friendly farming works, becoming an essential part of the Empower Farms team.

Please contact us if you would like to become an extended volunteer.
