FAMILY DAYS POLICIES

Inclement weather

The farm is open rain or shine. In case of severe weather, we will contact participants via email to inform them that the program is canceled. Participants may then reschedule for another day.

Eligibility

The program is open to adults (18+) with disabilities accompanied by a family member, guardian, or aid.

Teammates wishing to attend alone must complete an additional screening form. Empower Farms is not staffed to assist teammates with high needs unattended by a family member, guardian, or aid.

If a teammate who has not completed a screening form arrives alone, he or she will not be permitted to participate.

Participant conduct

Participants should follow instructions given by farm staff and be respectful of other participants.

Teammates work semi-independently in a group setting, and must be able to avoid overly disruptive or unsafe behaviors.

Farm staff instruct teammates in the activities and provide oversight and assistance to the group throughout the activity. If a teammate requires additional support, such as one-on-one assistance or help with using the bathroom, his or her family member, guardian, or aid is responsible for providing this assistance.

We work hard to match each individual with farm activities they can be successful at, and teammates and their family members will typically work on different steps of a process (e.g. one person places seedlings in pots and another fills the pots with soil). We respectfully request that family members, guardians, and aids allow teammates to work on their tasks as independently as possible. It is ok if it takes time for teammates to complete the tasks. Our priority is for teammates to contribute meaningful work to the farm. We have found that given time to attempt and practice a task, teammates improve significantly and become more confident with the task by the end of their visit to the farm.

Disruptive incidents

If an unsafe or disruptive incident occurs, we will discuss it with the teammate and family member/guardian to address the issue and avoid future incidents.

In rare cases, a participant may be removed from the program. These circumstances may include:

  • Harming, harassing, or bullying another teammate, staff member, or other individual at the farm
  • Dangerous behavior
  • Significant disruption of the program
